The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

The pickup truck segment is massive, there’s no doubt. In 2020, pickup trucks accounted for roughly 13% of all vehicles sold in the United States for the year. That includes the three best-selling models of the year. So gaining supremacy in the segment translates to massive sales for the winner.

With significant updates for the new model year, the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 looks to be that truck. In constant competition with Ford and RAM, the Silverado offers an exciting mix of appearance, ability, and convenience that truly make it the choice for your next truck!

Performance Features

Four different available engines mean you can find the right fit in the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, regardless of the application you’re using it for. From commuting to farm work to towing and hauling on the weekend, fit the right engine to your needs!

Snappy yet efficient, the 2.7-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine generates 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque – more than enough for daily commuting and weekend chores! This engine will be just fine for suburban handymen, family haulers, and daily drivers. Featuring an eight-speed automatic and the choice of rear- or four-wheel drive, it is a flexible and user-friendly engine.

From this base engine, there are three ways to go. If you’re looking for more horsepower, the 5.3-liter V8 offers a step up to 355 horsepower for highway cruising, although torque drops down to 383 lb-ft. Yet another step up, the 6.2-liter V8 puts down 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, great for towing and cruising – but not all that great at the gas pumps. However, if you’re interested in diesel power, the 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbo diesel makes that same 460 lb-ft of torque, while offering 277 horsepower but also getting better fuel economy than the big V8.

If you’re concerned about trailering, all of these engines offer decent capabilities, although some are more impressive than others. The 2.7-liter can pull up to 9500 pounds with the regular cab and two-wheel drive. The 5.3-liter tops out at 11,200 pounds, while the 6.2-liter can tow up to 13,300 pounds when properly equipped. Finally, if you want diesel power, the 3.0-liter turbo diesel also can tow up to 13,300 pounds – this is a massive two-ton upgrade over the towing power of the outgoing diesel.

Style and Technology

As is the general direction of the modern pickup truck, the redesigned 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 offers a broad and muscular front end, centered around an impressively updated grille.

Three different cab options – Regular, Double, and Crew – offer three different seating options. Regular cabs only have room for three, while Double and Crew cabs offer seating for up to six depending on the configuration. All of them offer plenty of front row space, while even the Double Cab offers plenty of second-row room for adults, with 39.9 inches of headroom and 35.2 inches of legroom. However, if you’re doing long trips, the 40.1 inches of headroom and 43.4 inches of legroom in the second row of the Crew Cab is hard to beat.

One of the biggest updates the 2022 Silverado 1500 sees is the 13.4-inch infotainment touchscreen on LT trims and above. While the 8-inch infotainment screen on lower trims is useful, this large display corrects one of the Silverado’s biggest gaps with other trucks. The infotainment center features Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa integration as standard, while voice commands are done using Google Assistant. All together this provides a comprehensive infotainment experience that is very user-friendly.

Safety

Modern driver assistance systems make the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 safe to operate, and to operate around on the road. Standard features across the Silverado lineup include automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, forward collision alert, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, and automatic high beams. Opting for the High Country package gets you GM’s Super Cruise technology, allows for hands-free driving and towing on certain roads while eye-gaze detection technology ensures drivers are still paying attention to the road while it’s in use.

Trim Levels

As with so many pickup models, the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado seems like it is infinitely modifiable. There are nine distinct trim levels, each one building on lower trim levels, as well as plenty of packages that can be added to them.

Stripped-down and basic, the Work Truck trim is just that – meant for work. Blacked-out exterior trim means less worries about worksite dings, dents, and scratches showing. The Durabed truck bed liner is tough, and can handle hauling plenty of cargo. The basic Chevrolet Infotainment 3 System with two speakers has a no-nonsense 7-inch diagonal color touchscreen with CarPlay and Android Auto, so that even when working you can utilize your smartphones to their full potential. Carpeted floor covering is optional, with durable easy-clean vinyl standard.

For the driver looking for the functions of a light pick-up truck but who at least wants some comforts, the Custom trim offers limited frills and a great sticker price. Tinted glass offers a little privacy for passengers, while body-color bumpers and grille bar and 20-inch silver-painted aluminum wheels dress up the exterior. A six-speaker sound system is standard. Carpeted floor covering is standard, protected by vinyl floor mats. Power windows and locks are provided – these are merely options on the Work Truck trim.

Custom Trail Boss trims add off-road features to the Custom trim level for affordable yet fun trail tackling. This means they are only available with four-wheel drive, and they include a 2-inch factory suspension lift for added ground clearance, an Autotrac 2-speed transfer case, and Goodyear DuraTrac Off-Road tires. Front recovery hooks are highlighted by their bright Performance Red paint. Inside, the only difference from the Custom is optional front and rear all-weather floor liners with Z71 logo.

Generally the most popular trim – and likely to still be in 2022 – the LT offers a value-minded mix of features. Chrome bumpers and mirror caps, body-color door handles, and LED lights spruce up the exterior. A 10-way power driver seat with power lumbar is standard, while both driver and front outboard passenger seat are heated. Remote start is offered and Keyless Open and Start is standard, while dual-zone automatic climate control is standard. Popular options including a Bed View Camera and Bed Protection Package are offered on the LT trim and up.

Just like the Custom level, the LT trims have a Trail Boss alternate, and it is only available as four-wheel drive. The LT Trail Boss builds on the Custom Trail Boss by offering larger engines and an auxiliary external transmission oil cooler for improved performance. Dual-outlet exhaust with polished tips adds a fiercer look. One notable absence is that heated seating is not available on this trim.

Stepping up to the RST level brings a ton of welcome convenience features. Keyless open and start and the EZ Lift power lock and release tailgate offer easier use. Body-color bumpers and center grille bar are paired with high-gloss black mirror caps for a refined exterior appearance.

The LTZ trims kick up the tech in the Silverado, with standard Wireless Phone Projection, two additional USB ports, an SD card reader, and available QI-compatible wireless phone charging. The rear seat includes a storage package for the little things, while front seats receive perforated leather-appointed seat trim. Automatic up/down power front windows and a power sliding rear window with rear defogger are standard. The front passenger seat is 10-way power adjustable, while the driver’s seat gets memory settings. For safety, an HD rear vision camera, Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert are all standard.

If you want a taste of the dirt with the premium LTZ feel, the ZR2 trim is the leading off-road option. Trail-ready springs elevate front and rear suspension travel, and along with big 33-inch off-road MT tires, make the ZR2 ready to tackle big boulders and deep, rough ditches.

At the top of the trim range is the High Country trim, with great luxury features and looks. Outside, big 20-inch painted aluminum machined face wheels with Argent Metallic pockets are standard, with a number of 22-inch editions offered. 6-inch chrome rectangular wheel-to-wheel assist steps are standard, making it easy to get in and out of the Silverado. Perforated leather seating is standard throughout the cabin. Sound comes via the standard 7-speaker Bose Premium Sound System with Richbass woofer, and navigation is standard on the infotainment system.
