History of Poplar Branch, North Carolina
Poplar Branch is a small, but lovely community near the coast of North Carolina. It was previously known as Currituck Narrows, named for the county it resides in and the nearby body of water surrounding multiple small islands off the coast such as Narrows Island, North Burris Island, and South Burris Island. The town of Poplar Branch is unincorporated, meaning it is not governed by any municipal corporation.
One of the most important historic sites in North Carolina is the Baum Site, and it happens to be located in Currituck County, just north of the Poplar Branch region. The Baum Site is an archeological gem as it is considered to be one of the “most prominent Woodland Period sites” in all of North Carolina. There is also evidence of the Algonkian peoples, Native American groups that inhabited the region before the introduction of European settlers. The earliest English explorers were said to have come across remnants, like ossuaries, of a coastal village created by the Algonkian peoples. The Baum Site, however, was not brought to light until the 1970s. The unique remains within the site had been hidden for centuries until erosion caused by the surrounding water uncovered the site’s secrets. Multiple excavations of the site were led by archeologist, David Sutton Phelps, in 1972 and 1973 to uncover the remains of the early coastal village. His work led to the site being added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Poplar Branch is a small, rather spread out community, but it still has many places and activities around the area that are enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. If you are traveling along Poplar Branch Road, you will eventually find yourself passing W T Griggs Elementary School. This structure and the land it resides on has a very rich history within the small town of Poplar Branch. In the early 1900s, Superintendent, Dr. WT Griggs, of Currituck County schools bought the land on which the school was to be built. Using the funding from the community and Dr. Griggs himself, Branch High School was erected between 1907 and 1908. Through the determination of Dr. Griggs and help from the surrounding community, Poplar Branch High School rose to be one of the best schools in the state of North Carolina. While the original school may have been much different than the present day elementary school, nonetheless, the history remains within its walls for the public to enjoy and reminisce about.
You may continue along Poplar Branch road and see the lovely community, or maybe veer off toward the coast and check out the water. Poplar Branch Public Boating Access is a great place to set sail for a nice day on the water. Further inland you may also enjoy some shopping at Coastal Accents & Design, or you can stop by the Grave Digger site and grab some souvenirs at Digger’s Dungeon. There is also a themed eatery nearby called Digger’s Diner if you happen to get a little hungry. If you are looking for some exciting recreation, head up north to Muddy Motorsports Park. If you don’t mind a little driving, there is plenty to keep you entertained around Poplar Branch.
Fun Facts About Poplar Branch
Poplar Branch High School, which once stood in place of the modern day W T Griggs Elementary School, was officially accredited in 1921. It was one of the first schools in the entire state of North Carolina to receive accreditation.
Poplar Branch is home to the famous monster truck known as Grave Digger. You can go and take pictures with the famous vehicle and even purchase memorabilia at the nearby gift shops.
